Working Principles
How I Work
Good accounting is mostly consistency: the same careful work every month, documented well enough that anyone can follow it. These are the habits I bring to every team.
Explain the variance, don’t plug it.#
A reconciliation is only done when every difference has a reason. I research discrepancies back to the source, whether that’s a missed deposit, a duplicate entry, or a miscoded invoice, so the balance on the books is one the team can trust.
Own my part of the close.#
I treat close deadlines as commitments. My entries, accruals, and schedules are ready on time with support attached, and if something is going to slip, my manager hears it from me early, not on day five.
Fix it once, then write it down.#
When I find a process that depends on memory or workarounds, I standardize it. That’s how a new accounts receivable process and a company-wide corporate card reconciliation SOP came out of my work.
Learn the business, not just the ledger.#
Fuel and toll expenses, bills of lading, intercompany marina transactions, legal-industry payroll: the numbers make more sense when you understand the operation behind them. I ask questions until I do.
